RCDS Receives School Garden Grant

The RCDS Sustainability Initiative, under the leadership of Kerry Linderoth and Clemmie Everett, has received a $2000 grant from the Whole Kids Foundation. In the application for the grant, Headmaster Scott Nelson explained the School's plans for a Middle and Upper School garden that will also serve as a Garden for the summer ACTION program.
If awarded this grant, we will use the funds to repair a preexisting campus garden that had been created as a senior project in 2010. In addition to maintaining the garden with Middle and Upper School classes throughout the school year, the garden will be cared for throughout the summer by middle school students participating in our school's ACTION program, which was founded in 1986. The goal of the ACTION program is to expand the academic horizons of highly motivated middle school students from local communities that may not have the resources available to provide summer academic enrichment.
Sustainability is a fundamental initiative at Rye Country Day School. In 2013, our school was named a Green Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. Led by our school's sustainability committee of approximately twenty faculty and staff members, we strive to promote environmental responsibility within our school curricula and the community at large. Providing our ACTION students with the opportunity and responsibility of maintaining a garden throughout the summer will be rewarding for the students, the campus, and the local community. It is our hope that this experience will have a lasting impact on all those involved with the school garden.
