Honored Alumni

Alumni Hall of Fame Dinner

A new RCDS tradition began in October 2005 when the first Alumni Hall of Fame dinner was held on campus to honor five inductees.  The Alumni Hall of Fame was created by the Alumni Executive Board to recognize alumni for their post-RCDS accomplishments. The next Alumni Hall of Fame Dinner will be held in October 2010.

On October 17, 2008, over 90 alumni, family members, and faculty gathered to celebrate the third Rye Country Day School Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner. Headmaster Scott Nelson welcomed the guests and introduced the presenters of each award. The following alumni were inducted for their contributions in their post RCDS careers: John P. Archibald (Special), Judith Burger '81 (The Arts), John Sabia (Special), Mark Solomon '78 (Professional Achievement), R. Adrian Walters III '91 (Athletics) and the Distinguished Alumni Prize Recipient, Colonel Kevin W. Farrell, Ph.D. '82.

Brief Summary:

John P. Archibald conferred posthumously for the recognition and appreciation he so richly deserves.  John was remembered by faculty and students alike for his devotion and caring attention to students.  Ross Zucker '70 who nominated him cited him as "beloved" by all students. Every so often an individual comes upon the scene who, endowed with a rare blend of wisdom and warmth, makes the world around him a better place for his being there.  John P. Archibald was such a person.

Judith Burger '81 an individual who has taken her early interest in art and design fostered at Rye Country Day School and has channeled her creativity into a successful professional career. She now runs her own company, JB Design Shop, LLC.  The scope of her company's work includes primary and secondary package design, corporate and industry branding, marketing materials and press or production run approvals.  Both her client list and her design offerings speak to the wide range of talents she utilizes.

John Sabia worked at Rye Country Day for twenty-five years. During his career at RCDS, he taught Primary and Middle School boys.  He coached three varsity sports (football, basketball, and baseball) every year.  One of the highlights of his career was coaching the Varsity Basketball team in 1983.  They were the only undefeated team on record with twenty-three wins and no losses.  This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of this accomplishment by an undefeated team and its outstanding coach.

Mark Solomon '78 has been highly regarded over the years by faculty and fellow classmates alike.  After six years at the Texas offices of Artner Hadden, Mark joined the law firm of Andrews Kurth LLP in 2003.  Two summers ago Mark was appointed Managing Partner of the Dallas office of Andrew Kurth which employs one hundred of the more than four hundred lawyers in the international firm.  He is also a member of the firm's five-person Executive Committee.  He has been serving clients in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities offerings, venture capital, and private equity transactions.  Mark has been recognized as a "Texas Super Lawyer" numerous times by Texas Lawyer magazine and as one of the "Best Lawyers in Dallas" in the area of corporate finance by D Magazine.

R. Adrian Walters III '91 has been cited by his classmates for his accomplishments on the lacrosse field and his experience as an ambassador and coach of the sport. In 1995, Adrian led Colgate to its first ECAC Championship and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was recognized and ranked as third all-time in career saves (653) and third all-time for saves in a season (213). In England, Adrian was an exemplary ambassador and coach for the sport.  He was hired by the English Lacrosse Union to be one of fifteen Americans to help develop the game of lacrosse in the United Kingdom.  He was instrumental in fostering a passion for the sport among school children there and served as an assistant coach to the English Under-19 World team.  Adrian has coached not only winning teams, but also seven different athletes to All-American status.

Colonel Kevin W. Farrell, Ph.D., '82, the 2007 recipient of the W. Lee Pierson Distinguished Alumni Prize is a professor of history at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  He is a noted academician, with two masters degrees and a doctorate in modern British history, a writer and teacher, and a true American hero as a result of commanding combat units in three major conflicts.  He is the holder of the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Combat Action Badge.  He also is one of a very few holders of a Ph.D. who has commanded a tank battalion in combat. Kevin's life has been devoted to shaping the lives of others.  He is a patriot and defender of our freedoms and a man of whom we all may be proud.
