Welcome Back to School

The new school year kicked off in traditional fashion at the Opening Ceremony in mid-September. All students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 gathered in the Khoury Courtyard to listen to a welcome from the Headmaster and encouraging words about the upcoming school year from the President of the RCDS Student Body, senior Janelle McDermoth.  The new Class of 2010 flag, designed by the seniors, was displayed before it was raised above the Main Building, where it will fly for the entire year.

Students Advance in Competition

Seniors Grayson Clary, Adam Colombo, Phillip Pennell and Eugene Vinitsky have been named Semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Students' selection for this honor is based upon their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT exam taken in the junior year. The Semifinalists represent the highest scoring entrants from each state.

The National Achievement Corporation has also recognized senior Obinna Nwakeze, naming him a Semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Competition, which recognizes outstanding Black American high school students. Of the more than 160,000 students who enter the competition, only 1,600 advance to Semifinalist standing.

Congratulations are also in order for the following students who have achieved Commended Student status in the 2010 National Merit Competition:Isabel Beshar, Rachel Blumer, Katie Cordiano, Josh Geller, Lindsay Haut, Dan Judd, Hannah Loewentheil, Jon Madorsky, Alex Rieger, Alex Sabatini, TJ Sarda, Julia Sayles, Andrew Schneider, Chris Seter, Lizzie Tepler, Jesse Wayne, Scott Wieman, Katie Yates, Tomo Yokose, and Alex Zavoluk.

All-FAA Squash Honorees

Congratulations to sophomore Taryn Clary, junior Hadley Chu, and senior Katie Yates for receiving All-FAA recognition in squash last winter. Their achievement was inadvertently omitted from the recent Excellence Newsletter. Taryn and Hadley were named to the All-FAA girls' squash team, and Katie received All-FAA Honorable Mention recognition. All three girls contributed significantly to the success of last season's varsity squash season, and the prospects for the upcoming season are bright as these three top players return this winter.
