Welcome to the
Lower School
The Lower School strives to instill within each child a balance between
individual development and commitment to the community. Our
invigorating and supportive environment stimulates and promotes ethical,
social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth in every student.
In a program which recognizes each child’s unique timetable and needs,
the measure of success is in the ongiong process rather than the
finished product." - Lower School Philosophy

Grades pre-kindergarten through four comprise the Lower School division at Rye Country Day School. These years encompass a time of significant growth for students, intellectually, socially, emotionally, creatively and physically, and we in the Lower School strive to support and guide students as they acquire skills and knowledge that will contribute to the quality of their lives, throughout their lives.
Our faculty and staff are dedicated professionals who have developed a Lower School program that is based on active learning, i.e. learning by doing, by stretching oneself in ways that promote growth in all developmental areas. While challenging and exciting their students, faculty also provide a nurturing classroom where the students feel safe and gain confidence in their abilities. They encourage children to take risks with the understanding that greater insights to learning can be gained through the process rather than the product. Mindful of the skills necessary at each developmental level, the teachers create classrooms that are bustling centers of activity and reflect the varied learning styles of the students.
As you browse these pages you will see that the RCDS Lower School faculty actively promotes an atmosphere of respect for all individuals and for the environment. We look to celebrate the individual talents of our students while we recognize each child as an integral member of a larger community.
We hope you enjoy your tour through our community.
