In keeping with RCDS founder Susan Life's motto of "Not for Self, but for Service," members of the school community spend their Saturdays tutoring local families.
The SET (Saturday Enrichment and Tutorial) program is an academic enrichment program whose goal is to improve English literacy skills for over 90 students in grades 1-4 from the local public schools. SET is designed to give local public school students extra support during the school year to improve their reading and writing skills. In addition, SET offers an English Language Learners (ELL) program for parents, which runs at the same time as the student program. As well as practicing English, the adult participants also learn how they can support their children's literacy skills at home. Both programs are offered through Rye Country Day's Public Purpose initiative, at no cost to the attendees.
SET classes are taught by a team of 30 trained RCDS Upper School student mentors who use curriculum developed by Lower School faculty members. The ELL program is taught by a team of RCDS faculty, staff, parents, and students.
Currently, the SET program is looking to expand its library of books to include more stories with diverse characters and female protagonists. Please be sure to check out the SET book wishlist at the RCDS Book Fair and Gift Boutique, Thursday, November 8 through Friday November 9.
