Robert Herbst ’76 continued his impressive powerlifting career, bringing home three gold medals at the Single Event National Powerlifting Championships. The event was held at Western Illinois University on the weekend of March 4, 2023.
Robert competed in the middleweight division (75 kgs/165 lbs). His final lifts were:
-Squat: 122.5 kgs/270 lbs (the American record in the 65-69 age group)
-Bench Press: 90 kgs/198 lbs
-Deadlift 170 kgs/374 lbs
Robert, who began lifting weights on campus during his RCDS years, has won a total of 54 National Championships and 19 World Championships, in addition to setting 38 world records and numerous American records. He credits his weight training experience at RCDS with enabling him to wrestle and play lacrosse at Trinity College. While at Columbia Law School, he discovered powerlifting and has remained active in the sport since.
In 2005, Robert was inducted into the RCDS Athletics Hall of Fame, receiving the R. Adrian Walters III '91 Memorial Athletic Award. He was also inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Amateur Athletic Union Strength Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. Additionally, in 2013 Robert was a semifinalist for the Amateur Athletic Union Sullivan Award, which honors the outstanding amateur athlete in the country.
