A primary focus of the class will be reading for main idea and supporting details, in order to help further build and develop comprehension and recall of the text. Attention will be given to all steps of the writing process, including effective outlining, generating a thesis statement/claim, sentence and paragraph structure, selection and use of supporting information, proofreading, and revising.

Students are grouped according to grade levels and will work both collaboratively and individually throughout the course. It is important to note that the full benefit of the course comes with attendance for the full length of the program.

Students will complete much of the work in class, but there will be regular homework.

This course will offer students intensive instruction and practice in several key elements of English grammar: the parts of speech, the parts of a sentence, phrases, clauses, subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and comma rules. 

The course is appropriate for students entering grade seven and above, and it is especially recommended for students new to RCDS entering grades seven through ten.

Course Fee: $600

We will work with various high tech and low tech tools and skills to create unique works of STEAM using the machines and materials in the makerspace. Some of the making may include: paper-craft and paper circuits, 3D design and printing, laser etching and cutting, decoupage and textured fiber art, 2D & 3D constructions, electronics and micro-robotics, sewing and embroidery, soap and candle making, and much more. You will be able to take most of the creations home with you!

Ever wondered what makes a good game? This course will lead you through the game design process, where you will explore the different types of games and the recipe to make them. Students in this course will write interactive stories and develop games using the graphical language of SCRATCH. No previous coding experience is required as students will learn fundamental programming principles and techniques. Students will work through examples to pick up the essential skills needed to design and build their very own game. Don’t just be a game player, become a game maker, too!

The course is open to students entering grades five through eight.

For this course, suitable for remote or onsite learning, students will start with an initial robot prototype and learn how to add on to this design and code the robot to solve a series of challenging puzzles!  We will be using a new, non-Lego robotics kit that supports Microsoft’s MakeCode, a block-based and cross-platform programming environment that teaches concepts such as variables, conditionals, and functions.  The robot has an ultrasonic sensor, touch bumper, a color sensor / line detector, inner gyroscope, and LED viewscreen - allowing for a myriad of learning opportunities as students code their robot to avoid obstacles, navigate using artificial intelligence, and develop complex behaviors.  See coding in action – and keep coding after the class with the robotics kit. This course studies the properties of plane figures including parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent and similar triangles, polygons, circles, right triangle trigonometry, areas, and volumes, as well as introductions to solid and coordinate geometry. Throughout the course, the student's ability to develop and present formal proofs is systematically strengthened and expanded through the use of inductive and deductive reasoning. A review of Algebra 1 is included, using equations based on geometric theorems.

Open to all students. The course is designed for students who have not yet taken Geometry. The text used is Common Core Standards aligned, so students required to take the Geometry Regents (CCSS) exam will be prepared.

This course extends the content of algebra through advanced-level consideration of various functions and develops skill in mathematical analysis. JULY 6 – JULY 31

One of the joys of computer science is learning to make things move, and interacting with them on the screen. Capitalizing on this wonderful, “Aha!” moment, this course explores the basic principles of Computer Science using the highly visual and interactive language of Processing. Students in this course write their first interactive programs, while learning object-oriented design and the fundamental tools of programming. Many of the problem sets invite students to program or design interactive games.

This course (or equivalent experience) is required to take Advanced Placement Computer Science; it will be equivalent to a 1/2 unit course, and will be included on RCDS students’ transcripts.

This course fulfills the RCDS Computer Science requirement in place for the classes of 2023 and beyond.

Have you always wanted to learn to read music? Do you want to be able to understand what the dots and squiggles on the lines and spaces of a musical staff mean? Do you want to learn how to read notes so you can learn to play piano or guitar, or other instrument? This is your perfect introduction to the language of music. Through this course you will learn to identify notes on the staff in treble and bass clefs, learn to read and write basic rhythms and note values, learn about sharps and flats, identify major and minor scales, and learn how to put together basic chord patterns. (1/2 unit, no prerequisite, grants 1/2 Arts credit)

This class is a refresher course for students who have had a year of Algebra. We will review at least 20 key topics taught in Algebra classes. Intended for the student who never felt that they learned all the concepts deeply enough or have forgotten important concepts, this course can provide a great opportunity to practice and strengthen needed skills for Algebra 2 before September. Competency in Algebra is fundamental for moving on to the next level in math, and we will use this course as an opportunity to (re)build these core skills.

This course will cover general test-taking strategies with a focus on strengthening core skills. Evidence-Based Reading & Writing topics covered will include: Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Rhetorical Analysis and the Essay. Our course has been specifically designed to give your child a combination of the academic skills and strategies he or she will need on test day.

The opportunity to sit for an entire, timed, practice exam at Summit Educational Group's Westchester Office may be arranged through the instructor at the time of the course's completion.

The driver’s education program offers classroom instruction and automobile experience taught by certified instructors from the Formula One Driving School in Mamaroneck, NY and fulfills New York State and insurance requirements for driver education. The course is open to students sixteen years of age or older as of the start of the course. Minimum enrollment in this course is 16 with a maximum enrollment of 36. The course will not be offered if the minimum enrollment is not obtained by June 12.

Students must be 16 years old by July 1, 2020 in order to enroll in this course.

Lecture Class Times: 
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 7:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.

Tuesday, June 30 is the first lecture; Thursday, August 6 is an optional review or a makeup day, should a student miss one of the previous lecture classes.

Driving Times:
In-car sessions are arranged by Formula One based on your stated preference when you register of three of the following five options:

• Mon/Fri/Sat: 7:00 – 8:30 a.m.
• Tues/Wed/Thurs: 8:30 – 10:00 a.m.
• Tues/Wed/Thurs: 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
• Tues/Wed/Thurs: 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.
• Tues/Wed/Thurs: 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Formula One’s Attendance Statement:
New York State requires that students attend ALL classes in order to earn their certificate. No exceptions.

We do know that there are circumstances that might cause an absence. There is no such thing as a “free absence,” since all classes must be attended. Therefore, please note that the absence policy for both the in-car portion and lecture portion allows for only one absence in each. This absence must be made up by the end of the driver’s ed course.
The make-ups for the in-car sessions have to be coordinated by Formula One Driving School  office. There is one make-up session scheduled for the lecture class.

New York State Requirements are that each student must have 24 hours of in-car training split between driving and observing, plus 24 hours of lecture time. Students must also exhibit safe driving techniques in the car and pass the lecture course.

Students who do not meet the above requirements will not qualify for a driver’s ed certificate.

Refunds:
If the assigned driving time does not work for a student, the parent/guardian may request a refund. The latest day to request a refund for withdrawal from the course is June 17.

Permits:
Students who do not have learner’s permits by June 29 must obtain their permit by July 15th and provide their Permit ID numbers to Formula One Driving School.

This class focuses on understanding our solar system from the historical and scientific perspectives. Topics covered will include planets, the moon, how these bodies move, how to view them from our vantage point on earth, and how our observations have informed different societies’ understanding of people’s role in the universe. Additional topics include constellations, stars, the electromagnetic spectrum, other celestial bodies, and more. Students will practice making observations of the sky with various tools and be introduced to ways amateur and professional astronomers engage with our skies.
 
Open to rising ninth through twelfth grade students. Not for credit.

There is only so much time to cover key topics in physics, and there are so many more topics out there! This class will serve as a time to learn about additional physics topics that do not fit in a traditional high school physics course. Topics that will be explored include (but are not limited to!) optics and light, thermodynamics, magnetism, atomic and nuclear physics.
 
Open to students who have completed one year of high school physics (any level) OR who can demonstrate a solid understanding of fundamental mechanics concepts, such as Newton’s Laws and energy concepts. Not for credit.

This course is designed with the goal of helping students achieve a deeper understanding of contemporary issues facing society. Students can expect to draw from topics in law, political theory, and psychology. A particular emphasis will be placed on the skills of dialogue. Most importantly, and most fundamentally, this class is a place for students to discuss, debate, and learn more about the issues they find important.
 
Students are encouraged to join for the full six weeks, but can also choose to join for one three-week session.
 
Open to rising tenth-twelfth grade students. Not for credit.  

$150 for a three-week session, $300 for six-week session
