As part of their unit studying Katherine Applegate's Home of the Brave, the fifth graders learned about the experience of the narrator, Kek, a Sudanese refugee who traveled to America during his country's civil war. To further understand the refugee perspective, they were visited by Professor Stefanie Chambers of Trinity College, an educator, researcher, and author who recently published her findings in a text called Somalis in the Twin Cities and Columbus. In her presentation, Dr. Chambers shed light on the differences between refugees and immigrants and the challenges each group faces as it transitions into a new country. The students compared the mistakes Kek made to other cultural challenges Dr. Chambers detailed, including some mistakes of her own from when she visited the homes of her interviewees.
