A Helping Hand

For weeks, Upper School students Paul Hadchiti, Philip Abdo, Michael DiCaprio, and Dylan Pepe have been hard at work using the 3D printers at Rye Country Day to construct a prosthetic hand for Nyianna, a 5-year-old girl from Bronx, New York. Paul, a junior who leads the Upper School club, Helping Hand, which develops prostheses at RCDS for children throughout the world, personally delivered Nyianna's new hand, and he made the fine adjustments necessary for it to fit correctly. He said, "It was a very heartwarming experience to be able to personally give her the hand."

Next up, Paul and other members of his club will be working on a hand for Xavier, a 6-year-old boy who also lives in the Bronx. In addition, they will be developing and prototyping a bicycle attachment so that Nyianna and Xavier can use their new hands to grip a bike handle.

Designing and building the prosthetic hand required the students to call on each of the S.T.E.A.M. disciplines. This project is a great example of our School motto, Not for Self, But for Service, in action.

Thank you to Helping Hand faculty sponsors Mr. Leath and Dr. Kopreski for all of the assistance and guidance they have offered to Paul and his clubmates.
