A-Chord With Kids To Receive ArtsWestchester's Education Award

Rye Country Day's A-Chord With Kids, a student-led volunteer program through which Upper School students teach music to children at the Port Chester Carver Center, is one of one seven individuals and organizations who will be honored at ArtsWestchester's Annual Arts Awards Luncheon. A-Chord With Kids will receive the Education Award, which is presented to an artist, individual, group, school district, or organization who, through extraordinary vision and leadership, has enriched education in Westchester.

Founded in 2012 by two Upper School students in partnership with the Port Chester Carver Center, A-Chord with Kids is guided by its mission to foster love, knowledge, and appreciation of music through interaction with high school musicians who wish to share the artform's invaluable lifelong benefits. The program offers two "seasons" each academic year during which roughly a dozen children of different ages and backgrounds at the Carver Center are paired with RCDS student mentors. The students and mentors explore different instruments with one-on-one instruction, along with music theory and composition.

Commenting on the impact of this long-standing volunteer program, A-Chord coordinator Stephanie Melgar shared, "The work of these dedicated volunteers is a strong example of how the arts and purpose-driven community engagement can combine to enrich us all. A-Chord is an inspiring student-led effort that truly embodies our motto, Not for Self, but For Service."

RCDS extends congratulations to all the students and alumni who have volunteered in the A-Chord With Kids program through years. Special thanks go to the 12 RCDS students who volunteered this season, the program's sixteenth!
