2024 Opening Ceremonies

Rye Country Day School opened its 156th year at the annual Opening Ceremonies, which included a few new traditions! The 2024-25 theme of CONNECTION was front and center as the entire school gathered for this special community moment.

Head of School Randall Dunn delivered remarks emphasizing the bonds we all share as members of the RCDS community and the benefits of connection. “Connecting with others will brighten your day, it will make you hopeful, and it will make you feel the care of this wonderful school community,” said Mr. Dunn.

Mr. Dunn also launched two new traditions at Opening Ceremonies: a spirited welcome for Pre-K students as they embark on their RCDS journey and an adoring applause for the Class of 2025 who encircled the audience as the School senior scholars and much-admired role models.

Student Body President Emily Cheigh ’25 delivered inspiring remarks emphasizing connection and encouraged her schoolmates to make new connections at school this year. “Every one of us has something positive to offer our community, and when we broaden our horizons and connect with each other we’re able to see that,” Emily said.

After expressing her respect for Pre-Kindergartners who serve as role models in their “willingness and bravery to be open to all others,” Emily advised all students to reclaim this spirit and to broaden their RCDS community circles. “Open yourself up to more potential friends, best friends, team mates, role models, bus buddies and more,” she shared.

The Senior Class Officers presented Mr. Dunn with the Class of 2025 flag, and for the first time ever, they gifted the Pre-Kindergartners their Class of 2038 flag. It was a wonderful gesture demonstrating the growth, community, and connection students experience during their time at RCDS!

Mr. Dunn closed the event stating, “This year, let’s think of all the ways we can connect and then let’s do it! Connected communities are strong communities. When we discover and nurture our connections, we are better. Let’s have a great year, Wildcats!”
