In May, RCDS hosted its annual INNOVATION WEEK, showcasing student projects that use Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) as access points for inquiry, invention, dialogue, and critical thinking. Student work was displayed in each division building and the Performing Arts Center Foyer. A virtual Maker Mania event challenged families to innovate with recycled materials. And the highlight of the week was the Student STEAM Showcase of work from all three divisions, including:
- STEAM Projects
- Makerspace Projects
- Science Research and YPT (Young Physicists Tournament) Projects
- Engineering Design and Robotics Class Work
- Grade 4 Inspirational Figure Sculptures
- Learning and Virtual Reality Experiences Designed by Middle School students in the Virtual Worlds elective - Read more here
- Independent Study Projects - Read more here
The evening concluded with the premier of Star Trek: The Musical in the Performing Arts Center Auditorium. The original student-created production was the culmination of months of collaboration by students, musicians, and faculty advisors.
Virtual Maker Mania Event
To kick off Innovation Week, Ms. Sestito led a maker Mania Event on zoom where students were asked to build a Rube Goldberg device.
Advisory Maker Challenge
RCDS STEAM faculty issued a Spaghetti & Marshmallow Tower challenge to Upper School advisory groups earlier this spring during Innovation Week. Teams of up to four students had 20 minutes to build the tallest tower using only 10 marshmallows and 30 pieces of spaghetti on 1 piece of cardstock per group. Congratulations to all the participants on their impressive creations. Mr. Burt and Ms. Farrell’s advisory came in first with a 105-centimeter tower!
