Annual Recycling Challenge Raises Awareness, Awards Lower School Students and Athletics Employees First Place

In honor of America Recycles Day, Rye Country Day held its Annual Recycling Challenge from November 15 to December 13, 2024, with the Lower School Division and Athletics Office winning first place in the respective student and employee competitions. (80% of Lower School students’ recyclables were sorted correctly and 82% of Athletics employees’ recyclables were sorted correctly).

The month-long friendly competition raises awareness about best practices in sorting recyclables, as well as the locations of compost, recycling, specialty recycling, and trash bins across campus.  Throughout the five-week challenge, student volunteers diligently checked over 1,000 bins, collecting data on the recycling habits of the RCDS community.

Challenge participants included the Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School in the student competition and the Business Office, Admissions Building, and Athletics Office in the employee category. The winners accepted their trophies—which were 3D Printed in the Makerspace—at the final Lower School Community Meeting of 2024 in December.

The challenge was led by RCDS’s Sustainability Team, including Upper School Environmental Club, Environmental Science and Spanish students, the Middle School Green Team, and the Lower School Growing Green Club.

A wonderful community effort showcasing Rye Country Day’s commitment to sustainability.
