AP Biology Students Remotely Operate A Scanning Electron Microscope

AP Biology students had the opportunity to use a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with the guidance of guest scientist Dr. Cassandra Zamora from the University of Toledo. Dr. Zamora was impressed with the students and how quickly they adjusted to using the SEM, which produces images of a sample by scanning the surface with a focused beam of electrons. After learning how the microscope works and how it is used for research, students controlled it remotely with Dr. Zamora providing tips and feedback in real-time. The students chose to use the SEM to examine samples ranging from pollen and the eye of a moth to cloth face masks. The experience helped students learn the differences between light and electron microscopy and how SEM images are used in biomimicry to develop new products.
