At 13th Annual Green Screen, Kelp is Key!

On January 29, the RCDS Community gathered in the Black Box Theater for the 2026 Green Screen event, an annual gathering evening focused on environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation.

Sponsored by the RCDS Sustainability Program, the PA Sustainability Committee, and the City of Rye Sustainability Committee, the program explored marine ecosystems through a screening of the documentary Kelp!, which highlights the critical role kelp forests play in combating climate change and supporting ocean biodiversity.

The evening began with a zero-waste reception with a kelp-inspired menu and light refreshments. Guests also enjoyed a student project showcase, which demonstrated the ways RCDS students are actively engaging with sustainability initiatives and environmental problem-solving.

Following the screening, attendees viewed a pre-recorded Q&A with the film’s producer and director, Caylon La Mantia, who offered insight into the making of the documentary and the growing global interest in regenerative ocean farming. The program continued with a presentation by Tim Abbott of SoundWaters Kelp Farm, who shared practical, local perspectives on kelp cultivation and its environmental impact.

Many thanks to Director of Sustainability Kerry Linderoth, PA Sustainability Committee Co-Chairs Emily Dorin P’26, P’31 and Jacqueline Steinert P’31, and the City of Rye Sustainability Committee for their collaboration on this thoughtful program and their continued efforts to encourage students to explore sustainability!
