Connecting Literature and Lived History: Fifth-Grade Language Arts Classes Visit Museum of Jewish Heritage

As part of the Grade 5 Language Arts curriculum, students read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The award-winning historical fiction book tells the tale of a Jewish family escaping persecution in Copenhagen, Denmark, during World War II.

To deepen their understanding of the book’s themes and historical context, the fifth graders visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage and spent considerable time at the exhibit Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark.

Through the exhibit’s immersive story-based experience, students learned about the history of the Jews in Denmark during World War II and the Danes who joined the movement to resist the Nazis. The fifth graders observed themes of separation, bravery, and resilience, while reflecting on the dangers of prejudice and silence.

This impactful field trip, now in its third year, connects literature and lived history to foster a lasting appreciation for the power of kindness, inclusion, and courage in the face of injustice.
