Eighth graders in Dr. Cheigh’s Introduction to Physical Science class applied their learning of the scientific method by constructing mini rocket ships using straws and paper. 

Students worked in pairs to observe how changing their independent variable (the height of the paper fin) would affect their dependent variable (the distance the straw rocket traveled). 

After observing and documenting a few rounds of trial and error, the Middle Schoolers made a discovery about the impact of fin size on the distance their rockets traveled. Enlarging the fins beyond a certain point slowed down the ships. Minimizing the fins sacrificed stability and directional accuracy.  The conclusion: a precise fin size could control drag while providing stability.
