Eighth Graders Explore Laws of Physics and Energy Transfers, Creating Carnival Games

Earlier in January, students in Dr. Cheigh's and Ms. Knecht’s science classes were tasked with creating a carnival game using recycled materials that demonstrated one or more of Newton’s Laws of Motion. Their games were also required to exercise contact forces (push, pull, friction, normal force), and transfer of energy. Working with a partner, they were given three sessions to build their game in the Makerspace and then took two class periods to play and review each other’s games.

The project emphasized collaboration, problem-solving, creativity, and applying physics concepts to real world designs.
