Eleventh Graders Share Early American History Artifacts Work with Third Graders

At Rye Country Day School, students often have the opportunity to collaborate and share knowledge across divisions. Recently, eleventh graders presented their Early North American Artifacts projects to third graders.

Drawing on in-class lectures and independent research, each eleventh grader selected an early American artifact to design and build in the RCDS Makerspace. The artifacts, which varied widely, included a traditional pilgrim hat, an indentured servant contract, a Native American necklace, and a Quaker meeting house, among others. The students’ collective projects created a thought-provoking representation of the mosaic of American history. As part of this work, Upper Schoolers explored how their history projects illuminated a range of historical narratives and the various lenses they offer into the study of American history.

Third graders were especially engaged in their older schoolmates’ presentations, which included opportunities to see the artifacts up close and ask questions. Third graders enjoyed understanding how their knowledge of various elements of American history connect and interact.
