Fifth Grade Bottle Ban Brings Together Sustainability and Public Purpose

During their study of plastic pollution, Grade 5 students in the Bortner/Rose homeroom elected to stop receiving single-use plastic water bottles during lunch. Support for the sustainability-driven “bottle ban” grew quickly amongst fifth graders. The entire fifth grade (all four homerooms) is now using reusable water bottles. Integrating public purpose and advocacy into their study of pollution, students collaborated on a culminating project, a “Reduce Your Use of Plastics” poster to help spread awareness of plastic waste and encourage other RCDS students and employees to adopt the “bottle ban.”
