Football Wins the 2023 MIFL Championship

 

On Friday, November 10, the Varsity Football team captured the 2023 MIFL Championship, after defeating Poly Prep, 38-6! The championship game was held at SUNY Purchase under the lights, with the stands packed with RCDS fans coming out in full force with the blue and gold spirit! It was a thrilling end to a tremendous season under the leadership of Head Coach John Calandros and Assistant Coaches Rich Knazik, George Lambrecht, Charles Ogbonna, and Troy Thomas. 

Scoring Summary

First Quarter

Poly Prep scored first to go up, 6-0, but the Wildcats responded on the first drive with a 10-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion by Cole Denson ’24, putting the Wildcats up, 8-6. For the rest of the game, the Wildcats had a stout defensive performance, as they held Poly Prep scoreless.

Second Quarter

On the next offensive possession, quarterback Luca Strazzini '24 connected on a remarkable 51-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Amir Hogans '26. Patrick Leonard ’24 then punched in the two-point conversion, making the score 16-6. 

Later in the second quarter, DB Christopher Emmet ’25 had an interception, which led to a 23-yard touchdown run by Cole. Luca connected on the two-point conversion to Billy Fallon ’24, making the score 24-6.

Third Quarter

RCDS scored on the opening drive of the third quarter on a 1-yard rush by Cole, extending the lead, 30-6.

Fourth Quarter

A 58-yard run by Cole put the Wildcats on Poly’s 2-yard line. Cole rushed for a touchdown on the next play, followed by the 2-point conversion on a pass from Luca to Amir, increasing the lead to 38-6.

Following the game, Head Coach John Calandros shared, “This was an amazing team victory that started last year after losing the championship game. We had an amazing senior class that led us throughout the season despite dealing with some injuries. The coaching staff feels very lucky to have coached this championship team this season.”
