Every fall, the RCDS community comes together to collect food items to be donated to one of our community partners, the Carver Center Food Pantry in Port Chester. The Can-Do Drive encourages members of the RCDS community to do their part in combating hunger in the local community.
The fourth grade takes the lead on this important Public Purpose project, which includes teaching the rest of the community about the Carver Center and how to support the Can-Do Drive. Following the conclusion of the drive, on October 22, the fourth graders packed approximately 100 bags of cereals, vegetable/canola oil, rice, shelf stable milk, assorted spices, and more.
The class then visited the Carver Center, where they learned more about food insecurity, the work that food pantries do, and how the Carver Center holistically approaches addressing the needs of the community through education, recreation, and wellness programming. The fourth graders enjoyed a tour of the Carver Center facilities and concluded their visit by sorting the donated Can-Do Drive items, which will soon be distributed to families in need.
This annual RCDS effort is a wonderful all-school example of our motto, Not for Self, but for Service, coordinated by the P.E. Department and Public Purpose Program.
