In Grade 7 Pre-Algebra, students practiced their math— and specifically their percent calculation—skills though a holiday-themed budgeting assignment. Students were tasked with planning a holiday party with a budget of $200.00 to cover an appetizer, main dish, sides, dessert, and beverages.
Students determined the quantity needed for each item based on expected guests, compared advertised prices, estimated subtotals, and calculated the cost per person.
After presenting their budget proposals, students reflected on the activity and calculated the percentage of budget they allocated to various elements of the party.
The project was an engaging way to incorporate real-life connections while introducing the percent unit.
