Grade 9 Social Action Day: Public Purpose in Action

In early October, the entire ninth grade participated in an on-campus Social Action Day on campus, a half-day initiative designed to spark inspiration and deepen understanding around the RCDS motto, Not for Self, But for Service.

The day began with an introduction to the RCDS Public Purpose program from Director and Assistant Director Rebecca Drago and Noelle Morano, who highlighted ways students can make a difference throughout their Upper School years. Students then heard from a panel of RCDS seniors who shared examples of Public Purpose work on campus and in the broader RCDS community.

Following the broader discussions, students headed to break-out action groups organized by service projects. One group created blankets for The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester and Paws Crossed Animal Rescue in Elmsford, while another developed a sustainable boutique in the Cohen Center. Other group projects from the day included making seed packets for the Seed Library, crafting sustainability signs to raise awareness, and maintaining the School’s gardens.

This experience was a meaningful way for ninth graders to practice public purpose work during the school day while setting the stage for their future advocacy and community engagement work.
