Halloween Spirit in Second Grade

Second graders have been enjoying getting into the Halloween spirit in their Specials classes. 

In art class, students continued their tradition of creating life-sized skeletons! First, each student worked with a partner to create a full-body trace of their skeleton. Next, they borrowed the life-size skeleton, Cleo, from Ms. Simpson's science room and observed its details to draw realistic bones into the body shape. In Library, the second graders learned about the artist Jose Posada, known for his skull illustrations, reading the book Funny Bones by Duncan Tonatiuh. Finally, back in the art room, they painted the bones white. The collaborative, interdisciplinary project came together in a fun and spooky display in the hallway. 

In music class, students enjoyed the music game Pass the Pumpkin. The original version of the game is designed to help students practice keeping a steady beat, while passing a plush pumpkin around a circle and singing in unison.

Ms. Franklin took the activity a step further by having eliminated students play different instruments, including xylophones, metallophones, tubano drums, and even a thunder tube!

Throughout the game, students worked on their ensemble skills—listening carefully to one another, blending their sounds, and playing together as a group—all while having fun making music. By the end of class, everyone was playing instruments and singing jo
