Illaria Liedtke ’27 Wins First Place and Grand Award at Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair

Illaria Liedtke ’27 earned First Place in Biomedical and Health Sciences at the prestigious Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), one of the world’s largest and most competitive pre-college science research competitions. In addition to her category win, Illaria also received a coveted Grand Award for her groundbreaking research.

Illaria represented Rye Country Day School alongside junior Chase Talpins ’27 and Science Research Director Jen Doran. At the renowned international competition, thousands of top young scientists from around the globe gathered to present innovative research addressing pressing scientific challenges.
Illaria’s winning research tackled the issue of neurodegeneration. She was inspired to do this research after volunteering at an elder center and seeing the devastating impacts of neurological decline. Her paper is titled Remote, Tunable Modulation of Astrocytic Calcium Signaling via an Engineered Paramagnetic Matrix: A Non-Invasive Platform for Neuroprotection in CNS Disease.

Chase’s research was focused on sustainable approaches to food waste. His presentation is titled Investigating Circadian Rhythmicity and Growth Phenotype in Neurospora intermedia to Utilize Industrial Food Waste.

“We are absolutely thrilled,” said  Ms. Doran. “To watch Illaria present her work on an international stage and be recognized at the highest level is an extraordinary moment for her, her family, and RCDS’s Science Research Program.”

“Both Illaria and Chase have made us very proud,” continued Ms. Doran. “They highlighted the power of student-driven scientific inquiry and mentorship.”
