On March 1, Upper School Spanish Teacher Laura Mungavin presented at the 2025 Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in New York City. Her workshop, “Elevating Afrolatino, Asian-Latino, and Indigenous Voices in the Spanish Classroom,” discussed the importance of students examining different perspectives, cultural practices, and contributions to deepen their appreciation of the multifaceted nature of identities, communities, and cultures.
To avoid a monolithic representation of Spanish-speaking people and cultures, Ms. Mungavin encouraged fellow educators to explore textbooks and materials that are inclusive of modern Indigenous, Afrolatino, and Asian voices and experiences.
She also shared a number of resources to help fellow teachers support students at varying levels of language proficiency.
