Students in Grades 3 – 6 traveled to Hackley School to participate in a friendly Sumobots robotics tournament.
In RCDS’s after-school Sumobots clubs, these students have learned how to build, design, and program a Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot that pushes its competitor robot outside of the battle zone. In doing so, they must weigh the benefits and drawbacks of various engineering approaches, take into account weight distribution and center of gravity, and integrate sensors and intelligent behavior into their robotics programming.
The tournament was an exciting opportunity for our students to put their creations to the test and learn from their peers’ creations. Next, they will modify their designs and programs based on their observations from the tournament for a future event in the spring!
