In January, first-grade students learned all about trees! As part of their arboreal learning, they also welcomed a special guest speaker.
Founder and President of Our New Way Garden (ONWG) Amy Benerofe ’84 taught the students about the vital role trees play in building healthier communities. She also guided first-and-third-grade buddies in harvesting seeds from Honey Locust Tree pods. The buddy pairs then planted the seeds in small planters that will grow in their classrooms.
Prior to ms. Benerofe’s visit, Lower School Science teacher Debra Simpson highlighted the significant functions of trees as natural resources, from improving air quality to supporting local ecosystems. Ms. Simpson then invited the first graders to draw their own trees and share why it is important to care for them. Their artwork is now displayed in the Lower School hallways.
Later this spring, first graders will visit ONWG greenhouses to lend a helping hand and tour the Pepsico Campus to see their wide variety of trees.
Students were inspired to learn about the ways they can actively contribute to a greener future.
