As part of examining the school-wide theme of citizenship, Middle Schoolers are participating in a division-wide read of best-selling and award-winning author Sharon Draper's young adult novel "Stella by Starlight." Students and their advisors are reading the novel, and they are dedicating time in groups to discussing it and its themes, particularly those related to citizenship.

On Tuesday, October 22, Sharon Draper will visit the Middle School to lead two high-energy presentations during which she will talk about books, writing, literacy, and inspiration, with lots of audience participation. She will also lead a reader's workshop for a smaller group of students who have read several of her books.

Students received a copy of "Stella by Starlight" in homeroom in September, along with the recommended six-week reading schedule that concludes the week prior to Sharon Draper's author visit. Families have also been encouraged to read along with their children if they have the time.

When asked what she hopes "Stella by Starlight" does for readers, Sharon Draper responded, "I'd like for young readers to feel the rhythms of a close community, to understand how the past reflects the present, to think about social injustice through storytelling and song. When they read Stella by Starlight, I want them to learn a larger truth about life and humanity, without ever knowing they have done so."
