RCDS Art Department Chair Exhibits Work at University of Bridgeport and the Every Woman Biennial

Nine paintings by RCDS Art Department Chair Monica Tiulescu are part of the Winter in America exhibit at the Schelfhaudt Gallery at the University of Bridgeport University through March 15.

Featuring a variety of local, national, and international artists, the exhibit offers a range of perspectives on our current season, which for curator Peter Schelfhaudt is a time for reflection, assessment, recalibration, preparation, and transition.

Part of Ms. Tiulescu’s Erasure series, the paintings use generative erasure, fragmentation, and recomposition to produce unstable, speculative bodies that resist fixed identity, foregrounding form as contingent, unresolved, and perpetually in process. In the dense, layered, and bold paintings, the figures are rendered neither whole nor absent, but perpetually unresolved. Influences from architectural figure-ground thinking shape how bodies and space interact, producing hybrid, invented forms that resist fixed identity.

Another one of Ms. Tiulescu’s paintings, Erasure Smash 9, from the same series has been selected for the Every Woman Biennial in New York City. It will be exhibited in a group show at Pen and Brush Gallery, 29 E 22nd Street from March 8 to April 11. Members of the RCDS community can view the painting in the RCDS Library before it heads to Manhattan.

The Every Woman Biennial is a salon-style exhibition that showcases a variety of mediums, generations, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. The Biennial features painting, photography, installation, sculpture, video art, textile, and multimedia works, activated by performance, dance, music, poetry readings, theater, and film.
