RCDS Summer Session Course Introduces Students to Biotechnology Concepts and Techniques

Rye Country Day’s Summer Session offers a wide range of classes for middle and upper school students from any school. In the hands-on laboratory course Biotechnology & Innovation, students in Grades 8-12 were introduced to scientific concepts and laboratory research techniques used in the field of biotechnology.

Led by Ms. Bischoff and Ms. Zazzarino, the five-day course featured a variety of experiments, including:

  • Transformation of bacteria to produce a glowing jellyfish protein
  • Three Gel Electrophoresis Labs:   Students used genetics to determine puppies’ paternity,  different species of lemurs and forensics to determine who DNA found at a crime scene belonged to.
  • Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) Lab: Students collaborated a genome-editing activity.
  • BioBits Central Dogma Lab: Students used BioBits cell-free technology to conduct cell protein synthesis (transcription and translation).
