RCDS Upper School Students Excel in American Mathematics Competitions

The Mathematical Association of America hosts an American Mathematics Competitions program, which consists of a series of exams that are held throughout the school year to test middle and high school students’ problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge. Many RCDS students sat for the first set of exams, the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10 and 12, in November, and five students earned high scores to qualify for the next level of competition. Having scored in the top 6% of all students who sat for the AMC 10 and 12 exams, the five Upper Schoolers were invited to participate in the even more challenging American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) in February.

  • Alyssa Chu ’25
  • Illaria Liedtke ’27
  • Ethan Schales ’25
  • Veeraj Shah ’25
  • Melody Wu ’28

Additionally, Alyssa, Illaria, and Melody were recognized with Young Women in Mathematics Awards & Certificates, as they all were one of the highest-scoring girl-identifying participants in their respective AMC exams. With one of the top six scores in the Metro New York section, Alyssa received the 2025 Jane Street AMC 12 Award and Certificate. Illaria earned the 2025 Two Sigma AMC 10 Award and Certificate for having one of the top five scores in the Metro New York section. Melody received the D.E. Shaw Group AMC 10 Certificate, with one of the top seven scores in the Metro New York section.

With the second tier of competition, the AIME in February, Melody performed exceptionally well and qualified to participate in the third level of competition, the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) in March. This rigorous exam challenges students from across the United States on a range of topics, including algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics, and more. Qualification for the USAMO recognizes Melody as one of the 250 highest scoring students in the AMC 12 and AIME exams.

Congratulations, Wildcats!
