RCDS Welcomes New Employees to the 2020-21 School Year

RCDS was thrilled to welcome new employees for virtual opening meetings and training sessions last week. Please take a moment to learn a little bit about this accomplished and impressive group, and be sure to give them a warm Wildcat welcome to Rye Country Day!

Julianne Arcamone
Lower School Assistant Teacher
In 2018, Ms. Arcamone received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Pennsylvania State University. Since then, she has been a Grade 1-3 ESL Teacher in Anubantak School in Thailand, a fifth grade writing teacher at Aspire Middle School in Brooklyn, NY, and a tutor with Varsity Tutors. Ms. Arcamone brings her talents in teaching to the fourth grade, as she works with Mrs. Olson.

Gina Bergamini
Maternity Leave for LS Music Teacher Melissa Liebowitz 
Ms. Bergamini has a wealth of experiences in the arts, from designing and implementing general music lessons for Grades Pre-K – 4 at the Linden Tree Elementary School and other public schools in Bronx, NY, to teaching early childhood and modern dance for school-age children through the Penny Lane Dance Academy in Somers, NY. Ms. Bergamini holds her Master of Arts in Teaching from Manhattanville College and a Bachelor of Science with a major in music (concentration: dance) from SUNY New Paltz. We look forward to having her join us for this trimester. 

Andréa Catalano
Third Grade Homeroom Teacher  
This year, Ms. Catalano joins RCDS in her new role as a third grade teacher, working alongside Mrs. Aventuro and Ms. Hauben. For 2020-21, the third grade has been divided into three classes, and Ms. Catalano will be teaching a class of 12 students. Ms. Catalano graduated from the University of Scranton with a Bachelor of Science in Primary/Elementary Education and has completed her Masters of Professional Study in Literacy and Special Education. Ms. Catalano has been an RCDS assistant teacher for the past two years in first and second grades. In addition to her time with us, Ms. Catalano has been tutoring and teaching at Blythedale Hospital this summer.
Darien Cruté
Upper School Computer Science Teacher
Mr. Cruté joins us from Palmer Trinity School in Florida, where he taught Computer Science, coached, and took an active role in facilitating faculty development and student advisory discussions. He has also served on the faculty of Ethical Culture Fieldston School and Avon Old Farms. Mr. Cruté earned his BA in Computer Science from the University at Albany and his MS at Iona College. At RCDS, he will join our Computer Science Department and has already begun his teaching career at RCDS as an Introduction to Computer Science teacher within our Summer Session program.

Charlotte Fleischman ’16
Lower School Assistant Teacher
A Rye Country Day School graduate, Ms. Fleischman is returning to our campus after earning her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from the University of Vermont. In addition to her student teaching with second graders and three-to-five-year-olds, Ms. Fleischman has been a lacrosse instructor for children 8-16-years-old. We are excited to have Ms. Fleischman with us in her new role as an assistant Kindergarten teacher with Mrs. Davia. 

Vivek Freitas
Upper School English Teacher
Dr. Freitas joins the RCDS English Department from Rutgers Preparatory School in New Jersey where he taught ninth grade English as well as honors eleventh grade English. Dr. Freitas also worked with the Philosophy and Mock Trial Clubs. During his lifetime, he has taught English to third graders, as well as college undergraduates. Dr. Freitas has also taught at several colleges, including Emerson College, Manhattan College, Tufts University, and The United States Military Academy at West Point. He earned his B.A. from Colby College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Tufts University.

Stefanie Frolo
Pre-Kindergarten Aide
Stephanie Frolo will be assisting in the Pre-Kindergarten classroom with Laura Festo and Marlana Moysak. Ms. Frolo graduated from Binghamton University in 2018, and in a change of career, she is currently working towards her Masters Degree in Elementary and Special Education. Her experience as a college varsity women's lacrosse student-athlete and as a counselor in a day camp will be an asset in keeping our little ones exercising and fit both in the classroom and on the field.

Charlotte Green
Upper School Humanities Teacher
Ms. Green joins the RCDS Humanities Department from Miss Hall’s School in Massachusetts where she taught World History, advised, served as the school’s Experiential Learning Coordinator, and coordinated with the Academic Skills Center. Ms. Green also taught several electives including philosophy, historical bioarcheology, and ancient Egyptian history. She has also taught at the Island Academy International School in Antigua, as well as within the National History Academy summer program. She earned her B.A. from Muhlenberg College and her M.A. from Yale University.

Angela Guzman
Lower School Assistant Teacher
A 2019 graduate of Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Ms. Guzman majored in Early Childhood Studies. In addition to her field experiences, Ms. Guzman worked with Native Child and Family Services of Toronto as an assistant teacher in their Early Childhood Program and taught Spanish through the Toronto District School Board. This year, Ms. Guzman will be working with Mrs. Castagna in second grade. 

Melissa Hansen
Middle School Mathematics Teacher
Ms. Hansen joins the Middle School Mathematics Department, teaching our seventh grade pre-algebra students. She has spent 17 years teaching sixth-through-eighth grade mathematics in Yorktown. For the past five years, she has taught high school mathematics using both New York State and International curricula at the EF International Academy in Thornwood, implementing ELL strategies while working with the international students served by the school. Ms. Hansen holds her B.S. in Finance from Syracuse University and her M.S. in Secondary Mathematics from Pace University.

Emilie Johnson
Lower School Assistant Teacher
Currently a graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University, Ms. Johnson is pursuing her Masters in Curriculum and Teaching. Ms. Johnson graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Since then, she has been a fourth grade assistant teacher at Brunswick School. Ms. Johnson will be working with Ms. Caterina and our incoming Kindergarten students.

Kailyn Lazarus
Pre-Kindergarten Aide
Kailyn Lazarus, a graduate of Rye Country Day School, is returning to RCDS to assist in the Pre-Kindergarten classroom with Laura Festo and Marlana Moysak. Ms. Lazarus graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2015 and most recently has been working as a pre-k assistant teacher at Kinder Place in Stamford, CT. We are excited to welcome Kailyn back to our campus this year.

Nadia Padilla
Middle School English Teacher  
Ms. Padilla is joining our English department and our seventh grade team. Most recently, she has been teaching at Futures Academy in San Diego. Prior to that, she was a Teaching Fellow at Boston University. Although primarily an English teacher, Ms. Padilla has also taught Spanish and Social Studies. She holds her B.A. in English from San Diego State University and her M.A. in English from Boston University.

Nicole Regan
Mrs. Regan joins the team of RCDS nurses and brings with her many years of experience and expertise. She has dedicated hospital nursing experience in critical care, emergency room care, and legal affairs/risk management. With a B.S.N. from the College of New Rochelle, Mrs. Regan has worked in many different capacities in the medical field, from staff nurse to nurse manager, legal nurse consultant, and, most recently, a school nurse in both the Port Chester Rye Union Free School District and the Rye City School District. 

Joshua Rivera ’15 
Teaching Assistant - Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Mr. Rivera ’15 rejoins RCDS from Georgetown Day School in Washington D.C., where he served as a Middle School Enrichment teacher, assisted with auxiliary and strategic projects, and was a valued substitute teacher during remote learning. Mr. Rivera has a deep passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and humanities that was honed during his time at RCDS. Mr. Rivera has done extensive research on topics including the school-to-prison pipeline and has taught study skills to middle schoolers. We are grateful to have him join the DEI Team as a Teaching Fellow, where he will assist with the implementation of the DEI Plan. Mr. Rivera earned his B.A. in Sociology from Howard University.
Ryan Song
Middle School Principal
Mr. Song joins RCDS from La Jolla Country Day School in California, where he served as Middle School Principal. At La Jolla Country Day, he started a Middle School Academic Council, made data-driven curricular revisions, oversaw the design of student schedules, and developed an Ethics Council to reinforce community values. Prior to La Jolla Country Day School, Mr. Song worked at Collegiate School in New York City for 17 years, serving as the K-12 Computer Science Curriculum Programmer and the K-12 Science Department Head. Mr. Song earned his Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and his Master of Science in Secondary Education (Science) at the University of Pennsylvania.  Read more about Mr. Song here.

Caroline Weihs
Lower School Assistant Teacher
Ms. Weihs graduated from Colgate University in 2017 with a degree in Art and Art History and is currently pursuing her Master of Art in Teaching in Early Childhood Education at Manhattanville College. For the past few years, she has been at the New Canaan Country School as an apprentice teacher and most recently as an associate kindergarten teacher. Ms. Weihs will be working with Mrs. Lentini in the first grade. 

Jessica Zimmerman 
Physical Education Teacher; Head Girls’ Ice Hockey Coach
Ms. Zimmerman joins us having taught lower and middle school physical education in New York City at the Windward School and Manhattan Village Academy’s upper school. She has coached ice hockey in Darien, CT, and Westchester. Ms. Zimmerman joins RCDS as a physical education teacher and Head Coach of Girls' Varsity Ice Hockey, Middle School coach, and Assistant Softball coach. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in Physical Education from Manhattanville College. On the ice, she served as a two-time captain in addition to leading her team to advance to the 2008 NCAA Division-III National Championships and earning ECAC All-Academic honors for three years.
