Representatives from Sustainable Westchester Project and New Yorkers for Clean Power Discuss Clean Energy with Upper Schoolers

On October 17, Rye Country Day’s Sustainability Program hosted two guest speakers on campus to discuss clean energy with AP Environmental Science students.

Sustainable Westchester Project Manager Pam Miner and New Yorkers for Clean Power Program Manager Melissa Iachetta discussed the science of climate change and what happens to the planet when fossil fuels are burned. They also elaborated on the goals of New York State’s 2019 Climate Act which include:

  • Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050
  • Becoming a fossil fuel-free grid by 2040
  • Ensuring a just transition, including dedicating funds to disadvantaged communities

Ms. Miner and Ms. Iachetta also shared insight into various careers in clean energy and provided students with environmental strategies they can implement at home and school, such as getting involved with local organizations and conducting energy audits of their own usage.

Many thanks, Ms. Miner and Ms. Iachetta, for an engaging presentation and discussion.
