Second Graders Research Animals of the Long Island Sound in Reader’s Workshop

In Reader’s Workshop, second graders are working with reading partners to research animals found in the Long Island Sound. In the process, they have learned about various text features in nonfiction books such as tables of contents, headings, indexes, and glossaries, among others.

Before reading about specific animals, students activated their schema, or information they already know, about their assigned animals. Then as they read through the text, they recorded new vocabulary words and facts.

Next, students will continue to research the appearance, habitats, diets, and life cycles of their assigned animals.

Great work, second-grade readers and researchers!
