Seventh Grade Latin Students Demonstrate Ancient Roman Military Defense Formations

At the end of the school year, seventh graders studying Latin were learning about the Roman military. They researched, designed, and built their own full-scale Roman shields in the Makerspace, inspired by historical models.

With guidance from Upper Schoolers in AP Latin, who brought their knowledge of Julius Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico (his first-hand account of the Gallic Wars) to life, the Middle Schoolers used their Roman shields to march and demonstrate authentic Roman military formations.

The seventh graders marched from the Admissions Lawn to the Wildcat Courtyard to the Khoury Courtyard to showcase several formations, including  the wedge, the wall, and the iconic testudo (tortoise).

This study was a wonderful example of cross-divisional collaboration full of history, teamwork, and hands-on learning!
