On Saturday, May 18, six seventh-grade students traveled to the Ethical Fieldston School to participate in Ethical MUN (Model United Nations).
The event asked students to tackle moral dilemmas to resolve conflicts in committees based on the Trojan War, other historical topics, and books such as Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games and Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Working together and with intention, the students were challenged to think quickly and diplomatically as they represented the interests of their different book character constituents. They concluded the exercise by drafting equitable resolution papers.
Below are the committees in which RCDS students participated:
Hunger Games
- Problem: whether Katniss and Peeta’s district will participate in the next Hunger Games or join in a potential uprising against the Capitol
- RCDS delegates: Alicia L. ’29 represented Peeta Mellark and Olivia P. ’29 represented Gale Hawthorne.
Percy Jackson
- Problem: whether characters will join Poseidon or Zeus in an impending civil war
- RCDS delegates: Helena P. ’27 represented Poseidon and Nina K. ’29 represented Hades.
Trojan War
- Problem: whether characters wanted to end the Trojan War, as there was a secret Greek committee trying to negotiate peace with the Trojans
- RCDS delegates: Nina K. ‘’29 represented Paris of Troy and Bianca G. ’29 represented Odysseus, King of Ithaca.
