What inspired you to become a Math teacher? 
I was inspired to become a math teacher because I love math and wanted to be a teacher who believes in all of my students. I enjoy working with students to make meaningful connections and deepen their understanding.

My high school Latin teacher at Cranbrook School, Dr. “Doc” Rosenquist, had a lasting impact on me. I struggled, but he never gave up on me. His belief in me and encouragement continues to shape how I work with my own students today. 

Math is more than problems and formulas! What are some takeaways from the study of mathematics that you hope will remain with your students throughout their adult lives?
I want my students to have perseverance and confidence in tackling challenging problems and to trust their ability to figure things out, especially when it is difficult.

I also hope they take pride in their work, communicate clearly, and have good form.  Most importantly, I hope my students will approach all problems with curiosity and persistence not only in the math classroom but in their adult lives.

You are developing a new Math Lab, a dedicated center where students can receive additional support and practice. Share more about this!
I’m excited! The Math Lab will be a space where students build skills, gain confidence, and grow as independent thinkers. It will offer drop-in help, small group instruction, and enrichment opportunities. Building strong skills is fundamental to success in math, and this lab will give every student the opportunities to strengthen their abilities, explore new challenges, and succeed, no matter their starting point. 

How do you incorporate real-world applications or relevance into your teaching? 
I focus on problem solving. I want students to see that the thinking they use in math, such as persistence and trying different strategies, is the same thinking they use in everyday life and will carry with them beyond the math classroom.

Math anxiety is real for students and adults alike—how do you help build confidence in your classroom?
I build confidence in my classroom by creating a space where students feel encouraged to share their ideas. When faced with a challenging problem or concept, I encourage students to consider different approaches, reflect on their thinking, and refine their ideas. This process builds confidence and deepens their understanding.
