STEAM Director Cathie Bischoff co-led a presentation titled “Creation of Maker Science Artifacts - Formative and Summative Assessments in the Biology Classroom” at the National Association of Biology Teachers Conference. In this hands-on workshop, Ms. Bischoff offered examples of projects, rubrics, and a hands-on engineering design activity to emphasize the value of incorporating authentic maker projects into the science curriculum. Ms. Bischoff facilitated the workshop with former RCDS Science Department Chair Charaun Willis.
In her second workshop, Ms. Bischoff co-presented with two other biology teachers, Enya Granados and Maribel Gendreau, from schools in Atlanta and Virginia. Their presentation, “Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (JEDI) Work in Our Science Teaching Practices” highlighted JEDI practices in biology and science. Ms. Bischoff shared how she implements JEDI values in her classes at RCDS, including varios identity focused projects and activities in the Makerspace. She also discussed the importance of inviting diverse speakers to school STEAM events.
