Students Explore the Traditions and Meaning of Diwali

Last week, at Upper School Community Meeting, Tia Agarwal '26 and Ishana Kumar ‘26 shared the meaning of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. They also offered personal insights, describing how their families observe this special holiday and the traditions that make it meaningful to them.

Later in the week, Kindergarten students joined the celebration by learning about Diwali by decorating colorful diyas, small traditional lamps (typically made of clay) to symbolize light’s victory over darkness. The Kindergartners used model magic, glue, and markers to create their diyas, adding bright colors and patterns to symbolize light and happiness. They enjoyed learning how homes celebrating Diwali are brightened with diyas, strings of lights, flower garlands, and paper decorations meant to bring good luck and joy.
