The Rye Garden Club’s EnviroScape Teaches Second and Third Graders the Effects of Pollution on Watersheds

The Rye Garden Club visited Ms. Simpson’s Grades 2 and 3 science classes to share their EnviroScape, a model that demonstrates the effects of pollution on watersheds. With its surface representing the landscape of a coastal region, the EnviroScape helped students visualize what happens when pollutants, including trash, fertilizers, oil, and industrial toxins, are washed away from the land’s surface by rainwater.

The students added “pollutants” (sprinkles, oil, and paper shreds) and then created a “rainfall” with spray bottles to visualize how the pollutants eventually contaminate waterways and ultimately the ocean.

Thank you to the Rye Garden Club for this hands-on, interactive activity that supported students’ study of the Long Island Sound and Hudson River estuaries.
