The Women in Science Club Hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Panel with Oncologist and Reconstructive Surgeon

On October 22, the Women in Science Club (WISC) hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Panel featuring breast surgical oncologist Dr. Alyssa Gillego and plastic surgeon (and RCDS current parent) Dr. Julie Vasile. The event was a meaningful opportunity for students interested in medical research, women’s health, and careers in STEM.

Members of WISC coordinated the event, introduced the speakers, and posed thoughtful questions to guide the discussion. After sharing the educational and professional paths that led them to their medical specialties, Dr. Gillego and Dr. Vasile discussed breast cancer in detail. Offering statistics, screening guidelines, and an overview of different cancer types and treatment options, the doctors emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Dr. Gillego, who is a member of the Smilow Cancer Hospital team at Greenwich Hospital, described the comprehensive care offered to breast cancer patients. Dr. Vasile, a plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction across hospitals in Connecticut and New York, discussed reconstruction options for women undergoing lumpectomies or mastectomies.

Many thanks to Dr. Gillego and Dr. Vasile for spending time with our students to discuss breast cancer research and treatment, and kudos to the Women in Science for arranging this meaningful opportunity.
