Earlier today, third graders presented two amazing projects to their families! The morning started off with the Kindness & Gratitude Robot Parade. Following the parade, students invited their families back to their classrooms to present their Book Float Extravaganza.
This special third-grade work share was the result of two integrated cross-disciplinary projects that connect science, art, computer science, math, language arts, and social studies.
Kindness & Gratitude Robot Parade
In science, students worked with a partner and using the engineering design process to develop ideas for floats for the Kindness & Gratitude Robot Parade. In computer science, the students learned how to construct and program robots, which they coded to carry the floats. In art class, the floats come to life, as students used materials from the Inventor’s Workshop and strategies for building stable structures. Back in science class, students learned about electric circuits, because each float featured unique lighting! In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, each float reflect the benefits of gratitude or acts of kindness.
Book Float Extravaganza
For six weeks, the third graders enthusiastically worked on this engaging project that entails reading a fiction book, writing about a main character, and creating a book float for a special extravaganza. Each resulting book float was accompanied with the students’ summary of the book and their interest in it. A third-grade favorite for many years, the project is a wonderful way to encourage the students to be invested in both reading and writing.
