Upper School Marine Ecology Students Share Long Island Sound Research with Lower Schoolers In Advance of Joint Visit to Norwalk Maritime Aquarium

To prepare for their joint field trip to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Upper School Marine Ecology students shared their knowledge about the Long Island Sound with students in Grade 2.

Visiting second-grade classrooms, the Upper Schoolers gave engaging presentations that covered a variety of topics,  including pollution in the Long Island Sound (with examples from their recent Edith Read Clean-Up) and the diversity of species in the Sound (as told through a storybook and one student’s summer research project on crabs at SoundWaters). The Upper School presenters also shred 3D models of horseshoe crabs crafted by students in the Makerspace.

During the trip on January 10, the second graders worked with Upper School buddies to complete a scavenger hunt throughout the aquarium’s exhibits (the salt marsh, rocky intertidal zone, main hall, and climate change). They also reflected on the experience together.

While the Lower Schoolers enjoyed the touch tanks, the Upper Schoolers took a guided tour of the aquarium, which included discussions about careers and opportunities in the field of marine science.

A wonderful cross-divisional collaborative learning opportunity!
