Spanish 1 students in Ms. Angeles’s class explored the rich artistic traditions of Mexico through a creative interdisciplinary project inspired by alebrijes—vibrant, fantastical creatures traditionally handcrafted in hojalata (tin sheet).

As part of the project, students learned about the history and cultural significance of hojalata folk art before designing and creating their own original alebrijes in the RCDS Makerspace. Using AI as a brainstorming tool, students sketched imaginative hybrid creatures, then brought their designs to life with colorful painted artwork that blended traditional Mexican artistic influences with their own creativity and personal vision.

Throughout the process, students considered the symbolism behind the animals they selected and shared how their creations reflected both their individual imaginations and the characteristics of traditional alebrijes. 

The finished pieces were displayed in custom frames created by Makerspace Director Kevin Farrant and STEAM Assistant Teacher Katherine Rosell, who guided the students’ creative process.

By connecting language learning with cultural exploration and artistic expression, the project offered students a meaningful opportunity to engage with the traditions of the Spanish-speaking world while creating something uniquely their own.
