Wolfgang Liedtke, M.D. Ph.D., of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Leads Presentation on Migraine Research for Upper School Students

AP Biology and AP Psychology students recently had the opportunity to learn more about migraines in adolescents from RCDS parent Wolfgang Liedtke P’27, M.D. Ph.D.

As an executive in Global Development and Chair of Neurology on the Scientific Council at Regeneron, a Professor of Neurology at Duke University, and a Professor of Dentistry at New York University, Dr. Liedtke shared his findings regarding the triggers and phases of migraines and the prevalence of these headaches in males versus females. He also offered observations from his own clinical practice about various treatments.

From Dr. Liedtke’s talk, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the neuroscience of migraines and current research on adolescent migraines and treatments. In addition, students were able to hear about aspects of experimental design in studies using human subjects.

The Upper School students in attendance at the presentation were quite impressed with the insights that Dr. Liedtke shared. One student shared, “Dr. Liedtke’s presentation on migraines provided me with a completely different viewpoint on an often misunderstood condition. I used to think of migraines as just severe headaches, but I now understand they are a complex neurological illness that affects the entire brain.” Another Upper Schooler commented, “What I found most interesting was the discussion of new treatments for migraines… I would like to learn more about how these unconventional treatments impact the nerve pathways associated with migraines and how they are used to address the condition, and I will continue to keep up with news on new migraine treatment discoveries.”

Thank you, Dr Liedtke, for an informative presentation!
