After School Clubs for LS & MS

Overview

Registration for Winter 2019 will begin Monday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. through Friday, December 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Clubs will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Acceptance is automatic upon registration.

  • After school clubs are offered in the fall, winter, and spring sessions and run from 3:15-4:15 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
  • Children will be provided a snack and drink at 3:15 p.m. The cost is included within the overall fee.
  • There is no bus transportation at 4:15 p.m.; therefore all students should be picked up promptly at 4:15 in the Lower School pick-up circle.
  • After 4:00 p.m. updates regarding changes of dismissal should be made to Melissa Liebowitz at melissa_liebowitz@ryecountryday.org

Winter 2019 Dates

The winter session of After-School Clubs will begin Monday, December 16 and will end on Friday, February 21 . The week of February 24, March 3, and March 9 will then serve as make- up weeks for missed clubs due to inclement weather, teacher illness, conference days, or holidays.

Fees

  • $200 per club
  • Some clubs also include a supplies fee which is $20 unless otherwise listed
  • Both the club and supplies fee are charged to your school account
  • Each day, children are provided a snack, which is included in the price of the program

Math Madness Monday

Come play all sorts of math games and explore different math manipulatives! You can play games by yourself, with a partner, or in small groups. Also, listen to Mrs. Davia read a picture book about math!

Balloonology

Become the Book

Picture books are loads of fun!  After you creatively read them and act them out, you can further your excitement for the story by actually creating something from the book! In this club we will read exciting stories and act them out OR create art that comes from the book! Join me on Monday for "Become the Book" club!!!!!

Architecture & Engineering

Build a Roman or Ogee archway. Design and test various 19th Century bridge structures. Create computer-aided designs inspired by Frank Gehry and I. M. Pei. We will explore concepts and history of architecture and structural/mechanical engineering via hands-on building and computer lab resources.

Improv Games!

Based on the theater games of introductory drama class and the zany antics of the TV Show 'Whose Line is it Anyway", the "Improv Games!" club is a great opportunity to practice improvisational theater in a fun, low-stakes atmosphere.  Ideal for beginners as well as those with existing Improv experience, the club will focus on learning how to build scenes from scratch and accept others ideas, while utilizing a game-based format that will keep each challenge dynamic and fun!  If you have any interest in drama or theater, or simply want to improve your communications skills, join this club and prepare to learn a bunch and have a good laugh at the same time!

Global Storybook Engineers Club

PARENTS: This is a BRAND NEW club opportunity that is being offered!  It will include FOUR (4) of our school's initiatives: STEAM, Global Studies, Diversity and Inclusion, and Sustainability!

This will be a time for your children to meet other children from around the world while reading the same stories and collaborating on the same engineering projects.

STUDENTS:  Do you want to read stories, folktales and myths?  Do you like to build towers, boats, and BristleBots?  Would you like to meet and make friends with boys and girls from other parts of the world who like to do the same things you do?  Then, this is the club for you.  Join us!

***Please note this club meets on Monday AND Wednesday each week. The club fee for this program is $400 with a supplies fee of $40***

Model Magic Madness!!!

Do you love making projects with Model Magic? If you do this is the perfect club for you! We will explore many types of activities including making puppets, designing beads, animal art, designing fairy villages, and much more. You will learn many exciting ways to sculpt and create your own projects each week!

Minecraft Strategies

We will utilize collaborative strategies to build a sustainable community using the Minecraft program. There will be opportunities to explore architectural and engineering applying logic driven circuitry via Redstone and simple machines.

Lower School Sumo Bot Club & Competition

Learn how to build, design, and program a Lego Mindstorms EV3 Sumo Bot while participating in a weekly club and a one weekend Sumobot Tournament with other schools in the area! Students in groups of two will use Lego Mindstorms EV3 components to customize a robot structure, take into account weight distribution and gear ratios, and integrate sensors and intelligent behavior into their robots. Please only sign up if you are reasonably sure you can commit to participating in our tournament, to be held on a yet-to-bed-determined Saturday morning during the winter trimester. While this club offers separate middle and lower school signups to even out numbers and student experience, the group meets together in the computer lab. Join us, build your robot, and challenge yourself to succeed in an upcoming tournament!

Soldiers Angels

We will be working with closely organization, Soldiers Angels, who will help us essentially be pen pals with an American soldier! During the course of club we will write our soldier letters, send him/her packages, and draw them pictures. To go a long with our school wide theme of citizenship, we will practice being good community citizens and by supporting our soldiers. I can't wait!

Little Wonders

Children are naturally amazingly mindful, but in the chaos of today's world it is easy to get swept up in our fast-paced culture. The research is clear: mindful moments help improve the behavior and emotional well-being of all kids. Little Wonders is a club that will meet weekly and engage in activities that inspire wonder. Through meditation, yoga, mindful eating, tai chi, journaling, and gratitude practices, Little Wonders will have loads of fun all while helping minds thrive.

Spy Club

Have you ever wanted to become a secret agent? Then Spy Academy is the place for you! We will be training club members to become the best spies of RCDS by using special spy tech equipment and secret code names! We will need your help and skills to help solve the top-secret mysteries at the school.

Extreme Rube Goldberg Machines

Rube Goldberg machines are complicated contraptions involving lots of steps,  designed to execute a simple job in an exceedingly complex way.  They use marbles, mousetraps, dominos, toy cars, and tons of others unique objects.  They challenge the mind and confound those who design them.  Join us as we learn about the physics of simple machines, construct Rube Goldberg designs, use 3D printed parts, STEM skills, and robotics elements to create the most exciting Rube Goldberg machines ever seen at RCDS!

3D Printing

Chess Club

Enter into the magical and exciting world of chess with Chess Wizards! You will participate in epic chess games, fun and interactive lessons, tournaments, team matches, trivia and more! Our specialized classes are a blast for everyone. Whether you have been playing chess for your entire life and want to improve, are brand new to the game, or you just want to have a fun experience with your friends - Chess Wizards is the place for you!

The Strategy Games Club

The Strategy Games club is a unique opportunity to play historical, fantasy, mythological, and/or imaginary science fiction strategic games using hand painted miniatures, detailed scale models, and beautiful scenic layouts.  The rules are simple to play and use a variety of rules based on existing Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering, Heroscape, Greek/Norse Mythology, Medieval conflict, and several other Historical Simulation games. The gaming scenarios are decided by the club members with guided input and gaming expertise provided by the Grand Poobah of strategic gaming Mr Tofano. No experience is necessary and everything is provided.  New or veteran gamers are equally welcome.
